What is the purple ring on Snapchat?

A purple ring simply means that the user has uploaded a story that you haven’t viewed yet. When you watch their story, the circle will then turn gray until they upload a new story, and it will turn purple again.

It appears in the Stories tab and also in the Quick Add, so you can see when someone uploaded a Story even if you’re not friends with them. However, you will only be able to view the story if their profile is set to public.

The ring is actually not a new feature at all and Snapchat has always used the icon, but the color of the circle has recently changed from blue to purple which has caused a lot of confusion online.

What is a purple ring with a lock?

You may also have noticed that the purple ring sometimes has a padlock symbol next to it. This means that the photo or video has been uploaded to their own story and the user has marked you for viewing.

Snapchatters can set up a private story by heading to Profile > New Story > New Private Story. Then, you can choose the friends you want to be visible to.

It’s the same as Instagram’s Close Friends feature which allows you to share a story with a specific group of people who are on your Close Friends list.

If you are close friends with someone on Instagram, there will be a green circle around their story. To set it up, go to Settings > Account > Close Friends.
